GDPR Compliance

What Is the GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation lays down rules relating to the protection of people’s personal data and also includes rules relating to the free movement of personal data.

GDPR seeks to protect fundamental rights and freedoms of people and in particular their right to the protection of personal data.

How Is Beacon GDPR Compliant?

Data Protection Officer
Kevin McGrath has been appointed as the company’s Data Protection Officer.

Updated Privacy Policy
We have updated our
Privacy Policy so that it is GDPR compliant.

Ensure Right to be Forgotten
We have undertaken substantial changes to the way in which we store user’s data so that when someone requests that their account is deleted we can ensure that all data is permanently erased.

Ensure Right to Access
Any Beacon customer will be able to request a copy of any personal data we store for their account.

Email Communications
We occasionally send emails to Beacon users with information about product updates and special offers. As part of GDPR we have made it easier for people to choose which type of emails they wish to receive via our email updates page.

Product Updates for GDPR Compliance

Beacon’s Lead Capture feature enables our customers to collect email addresses from their readers. When our customers use this feature they will become a ‘Data Controller’ according to GDPR.

To ensure that our customers can maintain full compliance with GDPR we are making the following updates to the Lead Capture feature:

Informed Consent Checkbox
According to GDPR, anyone who submits their email address to you should be fully aware of what they are signing up for and you should be completely transparent about what you use their email address for.

We have added a checkbox feature to the Lead Capture and Resource Library opt-in forms so you can better inform your readers of what they are subscribing to.

Storing Proof of Consent
When someone opts-in to your Lead Capture or Resource Library forms you should be able to prove their location and also what they consented to. We will record this information for you in .csv format so that is easy to export.

Right to be Forgotten

If you no longer wish for Beacon to store any data about your account you can ask us to delete your account and all associated information.

To request that we delete your account please email kevin@beacon.by with details of the email address that you use to log in to Beacon.

We will ensure that your account and all associated information has been deleted within 30 days of receiving your request.

Please note that once your account has been deleted we are unable to retrieve any information that was previously stored. This includes the content of any publications that you previously created.

Switching to the new editor

In 2017 we decided to completely rebuild Beacon from the ground up.

This isn’t a decision that we took lightly as many of our customers loved Beacon just as it was.

Honestly, we had pushed the old version of Beacon as far as it could go and we needed to start fresh in order to achieve two main objectives for our customers:

1. Improved Performance

The old version of Beacon was built in 2013 and the internet has changed quite a bit since then. The code that was cutting edge then was now somewhat dated and this resulted in an increasing number of bugs that slowed the old editor down and made for an inconsistent user experience.

The new version of Beacon is not only faster but provides a much more stable platform for our customers to work on.

2. Extended Functionality

The internet isn’t the only thing that has changed since 2013. Beacon is a different company now and we have a much clearer idea of who our customers are and what functionality they need. As much as we tried, we just couldn’t make the old version of Beacon do what our customers needed.

In the new version of Beacon, we are able to offer much more control over the little things like text size and alignment. But we can also offer control over the bigger things too. We have introduced drag and drop functionality so you can create your own page templates quickly.

Using The New Editor

We understand that many of our customers will have started projects in the old editor that they need to finish. For this reason, you will still be able to continue editing projects that were started with the old version. However, it is no longer possible to create new projects with the old editor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to convert old publications into the new version?
Unfortunately not. The new editor is built on a completely different technology stack and as such the two editors are not compatible. The best option here is to manually recreate the old publication in the new editor.

How long will the old editor be available for?
For publications that were made on the old editor you will always be able to view them using the original version of Beacon.
